How do you tell the difference between adjective and adverb prepositional phrases?

In this post,I will tell you the difference between adjective and adverb prepositional phrases.

Remember that the difference between an adjective and adverb prepositional phrase is that an adjective prepositional phrase functions as an adjective.That is,an adjective prepositional phrase modifies a noun.


On the other hand,an adverb prepositional phrase functions as an adverb.That is,an adverb prepositional phrase modifies a verb.


๐Ÿ’Look at following example:

◆The woman in blue dress is my sister who has come from the powerful USA.


Analysis:
First,you should know the structure of noun phrase.

●Determiner+Adverb+Adverb+Adjective+Noun=Noun Phrase

●Now you should know the structure of prepositional phrase.

●Preposition+Noun Phrase=Prepositional phrase.



๐Ÿ’in blue dress=Prepositional phrase

๐Ÿ’from the powerful USA=Prepositional phrase



◆Noun phrase=blue dress=Adjective +Noun.

◆Noun phrase=the powerful USA=Determiner+Adjective+Noun



◆The woman in blue dress is my sister who has come from the powerful USA.


In the above sentence,The phrase"in blue dress" is a prepositional phrase from structural side but from functional side it is functioning like an adjective.

Here the phrase"in blue dress" is modifying the noun woman.So from functional side,the prepositional phrase "in blue dress" is an adjective and it can be called adjective prepositional phrase.
