Is "the" an adjective?

Today we are going to know whether "the" is an adjective or not.

Remember that a single word in different sentences can function as different parts of speech.First,we have to know about adjectives.Here is the definition of an adjective:An adjective is a part of speech that comes before a noun to modify that noun.

Look at the following example:

●Rahim is the bad boy in the school.

●Rahim is the boy in the school.

Here the word"bad" is situated before the noun" boy" and is modifying the noun "boy".So,accoding to the definition of adjective, the word"bad" is an adjective.

Now again look at the following sentence:

●Rahim is the bad boy in the school.

●Rahim is the boy in the school.

Here,we have to know whether" the" before the noun "boy" is an adjective or not.To take decision whether "the" is an adjective or not,we have to know the classification of determiners.

The types of determiners are given below.

1.Quantifiers:few,more etc

2.Possessives:my,our,etc.

3.Demonstratives:this,that etc.

4.Articles:a,an the.

Now consider the following example:

●Rahim is the boy in the school.

In the above example,'the' is an article determiner.As 'the' sits before the noun boy.,we can say that the article 'the' ultimately is an adjective.All determiners function as an adjective.You can say that all determiner are special types of adjective.

Bear in mind that "the" can function as different parts of speech in different positions in different sentences.

Look at the following sentence:

●The more she eats,the fatter she gets.
