Is "as" a Preposition?

Remember that we can use "as" as a preposition .Besides, we can also use "as" as an adverb or conjunction.

But in this post I will show you the usage of "as" as a preposition and I will give you the explanation of the usage of "as" as a preposition and much more.


Let me give you an example:


●As a brave man,he has to face the problem that is coming.

●Explanation:Here "as"  has been used as a preposition because "a brave man" which is a noun phrase is the object of " as." 

◆Remember that every preposition has a object.The object of the preposition can be a noun,noun phrase .

A preposition in a sentence builds the relationship between a noun to a pronoun or a verb to a noun.


●As a brave man,he has to face the problem that is coming.


Here,"as" has built the relationship between the man which is a noun and "he "which is a  pronoun.You can write the above  sentence like the following.

●He as a brave man has to face the problem that is coming.

●Determiner +Adjective+ Noun

So,"a brave man is a noun phrase in the following sentence.


●He as a brave man has to face the problem that is coming..

•Preposition +Noun phrase



So,"as a brave man is a prepositional phrase.




Now observe the following examples:

In this example,"as a brave man"is a prepositional phrase from structural side of prepositional phrase but  from functional side,"as a brave man" is an adjective  (prepositional phrase) because like adjective "as a brave man " is modifying the pronoun/noun ''He".


Conclusion:Certainly,"as" is a preposition.

◆An adverb can modify another adverb or adjective and adjective can modify a noun=Adverb+adverb+adjective+noun.

Here,hard is an adverb.The first as  is modifying the adverb"hard".The second as has a object(any other team in USA which is a noun phrase).So,the second as is a preposition.


Now look at the following sentence:

He wants peace as much as they do.

Explanation:Here much is an adverb.The first as is an adverb because it is modifying another adverb 'much'.But the second as is a conjunction because it is connecting two sentences.

First sentence:He wants peace.

Second sentence:They do.

He will give me the pen as a gift.




Explanation:Here "give"is a transitive verb.It can takes noun after it without preposition."Me and the pen are the two objects of the verb give.





●He comes here in the morning.

Here "come" is an intransitive verb.Here "morning"is a noun.Intransitive verb cannot take a noun directly after it.It can take nouns after it with the help of preposition.
