●He gives me a gift for my brother. 

●Explanation:Here "for"  has been used as a preposition because "my brother" which is a noun phrase is the object of " for." 

◆Remember that every preposition must have a object.The object of the preposition can be a noun,noun phrase or noun clause.Also, remember that an adverb does take any object.



More Explanation: 

A preposition in a sentence builds the relationship between a noun to a noun ,an adjective to a noun or a verb to a noun.

●He gives me a gift for my brother.

Here,"for" has built the relationship between 'gift ' which is a noun and "brother" "which is a noun.Give is  a transitive verb.

So,"my brother" is a noun phrase in the following sentence.


●He gives me a gift for my brother.

•Preposition +Noun phrase


So,"for my brother"  is a prepositional phrase.

In this example,"for my brother "is a prepositional phrase from structural side of prepositional phrase but  from functional side,"for my brother"  is an adjective (prepositional  phrase ) because like adjective "for my brother" is modifying the noun "gift".


Conclusion:Certainly, "for"  is a preposition.

Explanation:Here "give"is a transitive verb.It can takes noun after it without preposition."Me and the pen are the two objects of the verb give.



●He comes here in the morning for taking books.


Here "come" is an intransitive verb.Here "morning"is a noun.Intransitive verb cannot take a noun directly after it.It can take nouns after it with the help of preposition.
