What Part of Speech is "Where"?


To determine the part of speech of "where",we have to know the types of parts of speech.Remember that there are eight types of parts of speech in English language.


These  parts of speech are noun,pronoun,verb,adverb,preposition, conjunction and interjection.Remember that determiners are a special type of adjective.









To find out the part of  speech of "where",we need to  remember that a single word in different sentences can functions as different parts of speech.




Now analyse the following example:


●You are going to the market.

Here "to the market"is a prepositional phrase but it is functioning as an adverb because it is modifying the verb go(go where=to the market).Remember that a noun takes preposition before it to function as an adverb.


●You are going to the market.

●Where are you going?

In the above sentence, the part of speech of "where" is an adverb. We know that an adverb can modify a verb.Here  "where" is an adverb because it is modifying the 
verb "go".




Now consider the following example:


●Where he finds much water,he will also find these types of nice insects.


●(where means"in the place that or in situations that)

●Where he finds much water,he will also find these types of nice insects.



Explanation:Here"where" has been used as a conjunction.Remember that a conjunction can  join two clauses.

●Here the first and second clauses are given below:


he will also find these types of nice insects.

● he finds much water.

             where= aconjunction (a subordinate conjunction)


●Where he finds much water



Where he finds much water,he will also find these types of nice insects.

This is a complex sentence.



Now look at the following sentence:

●He  knows a beutiful restaurant  where the food is very tasty.

You can consider the above sentence like this:

He know a beautiful restaurant at which  the  food is very tasty.



●He  knows a beutiful restaurant  where the food is very tasty.

Here "where" is a relative pronoun because it is indicating the noun "restaurant".


 Conclusion: We are getting three parts of speech for where:a conjunction,an adverb,a pronoun.
