Hello everyone, today I will discuss whether the word "for"is a linking verb or not.

Is For a Linking Verb?

A linking verb is that type of verb that doesn't express action.Besides,a linking verb function like a  equal sign.

●He is a student.

Here,He=a student


Here "is" is a linking verb because it is expressing the alternative introduction of he by a student phrase.






Now look at the following example:

●He gives me a book for my student.





Explanation:

In the above example,the word "for" is not a verb.You can say that here "for" is a preposition because it is making relationship two nouns-book and student.

 Actually,we cannot use for as a verb but we can use for as a preposition and conjunction.So,the word "for" is not a linking verb.

Now look at the following example.



●●He was certainly there, for she saw him.



The analysis of this compound sentence with for has been given below:


●Independent clause one=He was certainly there

●Independent clause two=she saw him.

●Coordinating conjunction=for

●Punctuation=comma before coordinating conjunction for
